For most of its life, the LightStim handheld has asked for a small concession: an outlet within reach. Reviewers noted that the cord was long enough for couch or bedside use but still required sitting in one place, and devotees learned to treat the ritual as a seated one while the glowing head worked across the face in three-minute passes. On September 22, the Irvine, California, company removed that tether, launching cordless, FDA-cleared editions of its two signature devices, LightStim for Wrinkles and LightStim for Acne. It sounds like a modest engineering update. In a category where results are built almost entirely on repetition, it may be the most consequential change the brand could make.

The redesign keeps what loyalists already trust, the same targeted wavelengths and the same close-to-skin method, and rebuilds everything around it. Each handheld is now battery-operated, with an ergonomic handle and a flat, medical-grade lens made from a high-transparency biocompatible material that seats the LEDs near the skin and wipes clean in seconds. A full charge delivers up to two hours of continuous light, or as many as 40 three-minute treatment areas, which makes the device as easy to pack as a cleanser.

LightStim for Wrinkles carries a genuine piece of category history: it was the first LED device to receive FDA clearance for treating wrinkles across the full face. Its 72 professional-grade LEDs emit four wavelengths at once, amber at 605 nm, light red at 640 nm, dark red at 652 nm, and infrared at 850 nm, through the brand’s patented MultiWave technology. The goal is softer fine lines, refined texture, and skin that simply looks healthier over time. In the company’s own clinical data, every participant showed significant wrinkle improvement, and 92 percent kept improving after the trial ended. It retails for $269.

LightStim for Acne, at $189, is cleared for mild to moderate inflammatory acne and pairs 60 LEDs in blue (417 nm) and red (640 nm), a combination designed to clear active breakouts and help keep new ones in check. LightStim reports visible improvement in all participants. Its pitch is deliberately unfussy: no harsh actives, no ten-step regimen, just light, applied regularly.

That word, regularly, is the whole thesis. “At LightStim, we have always believed that effective light therapy should be clinically grounded, easy to use, and accessible beyond the treatment room,” says Joniann Marchese, the company’s president, adding that the cordless format “makes it easier to stay consistent with treatment and support long-term skincare goals.”

Consistency matters because the evidence rewards patience over spectacle. Red light’s beauty boom has been swift: Forbes put the global red light therapy market at more than $440 million in 2025, with projections of $658 million or more by 2032. Yet dermatologists remain measured. Dr. Shari Lipner cautioned that LED’s results are gentle rather than dramatic, making it best used “as an adjunct treatment rather than a stand-alone treatment.” Read that way, a device you will actually reach for every day, rather than a gadget that lives in a drawer, is less a luxury than the point.

Both devices are available now at LightStim.com and through Nordstrom, REVOLVE, and Dermstore, as well as at participating Massage Envy, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, and Palm Beach Tan locations, a distribution map that neatly mirrors the brand’s dual identity. For more than 25 years, LightStim has built its reputation inside treatment rooms, manufacturing its devices in its own FDA-certified facility in the United States. This launch is a quiet admission of where skincare now happens: not only in the spa chair, but on a flight, at a desk, in the ten minutes before bed.
